Privacy policy
Last updated: 12 October 2026
This page explains which data WhichDance uses, why, and what your rights are. It is short because the app keeps almost nothing.
The short version
- The app listens to the music through the microphone and works out the tempo and the meter on your phone. Audio never leaves the phone. Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded.
- There is no account. We do not know your name, your email address or who you are.
- Your history and settings stay on your phone.
- If you subscribe, you pay through the App Store or Google Play. RevenueCat checks the purchase for us under a random code. We never see your payment details.
- No analytics, no ads, no trackers, in the app or on this website.
Who we are
WhichDance is made by Thomas Oomens, a sole trader using the name HonestDev. Address: Regulierstraat 43 J, 6511 DN Nijmegen, the Netherlands. KvK (Dutch trade register) number: 52326470. He is responsible for your data (the data controller). Questions about privacy? Email [email protected].
Listening
When you tap the button, the app uses the microphone to hear the music that is playing. It measures the tempo in beats per minute, the measures per minute and the meter on your phone, in memory, and shows you the dances that fit. It does not look up the song. When the result is on screen, the listening has stopped.
Audio never leaves the phone. It is not saved, not sent to us and not sent to anyone else. There is no recording to delete, because none is made. The microphone is only on while the app is listening, and the phone shows you when it is.
The app also hears the people around you while it listens. It does not keep what they say.
What stays on your phone
The app keeps a few things on your phone so it can work. None of it is sent to us.
- Your history: the likely dance, any possible dance, the tempo, the measures per minute, the meter and the time of each result. You can delete entries in the app.
- Your settings, such as beat haptics and result sound.
- How many of your 3 free listens you have used today, so the daily cap works.
- Your subscription status, so the app knows whether the daily cap applies.
Delete the app and all of this is gone. The page Delete your data explains it step by step.
Subscriptions and purchases
You get 3 listens a day for free. A subscription removes the cap. You buy it in the App Store (Apple) or in Google Play (Google). They handle the payment. We do not see your name, address or payment details.
We use RevenueCat to check and manage subscriptions. The first time you open the app, RevenueCat gives it a random code. That code has no link to your name or email address. Against that code RevenueCat keeps the purchase details it gets from Apple or Google: the product, the price, the currency, the country of the store, the purchase and renewal dates and the transaction number. It also keeps the kind of device, the operating system version, the app version and the time the app last contacted it.
RevenueCat uses this only to tell the app whether your subscription is active, and to let you restore a purchase on a new phone. We can look up a purchase by its random code when you ask us about it, for example for a refund question.
No analytics, no ads
The app has no analytics, no advertising and no crash reporting service. We do not know how often you use it, what music you listen to or which dances you get. Apple and Google may show us anonymous download and sales numbers from their stores under their own rules.
This website
This website uses no analytics, no ads, no trackers and no cookies. The fonts come from our own server. The server keeps standard technical log lines for a short time to look into problems and abuse. They contain the requested page, the time and an IP address.
Who helps us
These companies process data for us. They may only use it to provide their service to us.
- RevenueCat, Inc., United States
- checks and manages subscriptions under a random code.
- Hetzner Online GmbH, Germany
- hosts this website.
If you buy a subscription in the App Store or Google Play, you also use services from Apple or Google. They are responsible for those services themselves, under their own privacy policies.
Data outside the EU
RevenueCat is an American company, so the purchase details under your random code are processed in the United States. That is only allowed with extra protection: the EU-US Data Privacy Framework when the company has signed up for it, or otherwise the standard contractual clauses of the European Commission.
Why we are allowed to do this
- To make the app work
- listening on your phone and checking your subscription. This is needed for our agreement with you (GDPR article 6(1)(b)).
- To keep the website running safely
- the technical log lines. This is our legitimate interest (GDPR article 6(1)(f)).
- When the law requires it
- for example when we must keep or hand over data (GDPR article 6(1)(c)).
How long we keep data
- Audio: not at all. It is analysed in memory and never stored.
- History and settings: on your phone, until you delete them or delete the app.
- Purchase details at RevenueCat: as long as the subscription can still be restored or a refund question can come up. Want them deleted sooner? Email us and we ask RevenueCat to delete the code.
- Website log lines: a few weeks at most.
Your rights
You can ask us which data we have about you. You can also ask us to correct it, delete it or give you a copy. And you can object or ask us to process less. Email [email protected]. We reply within one month. Because there is no account, we may ask you for the random code from the app so we can find the purchase that belongs to you.
Not happy with how we handle your data? You can file a complaint with the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, or with the authority in your own country.
Children
WhichDance is not made especially for children. Are you under 16? Then ask a parent or guardian for permission before you buy a subscription.
Changes
If we change this privacy policy, we update the date at the top. We also announce big changes on this website.
